Construction Technician
in Modern Biomass Heating

Job Description

Biothermic requires a mechanical technician with expertise applicable to modular biomass boiler plant construction and deployment. This full-time position will be based at our Thunder Bay location with travel to remote locations in Ontario.

As Construction Technician, you will be responsible for all phases of construction of our modular heating solutions, including:

      • Communicating with suppliers
        • Maintaining inventory
        • Working with construction plans and shop drawings
        • Conventional construction (framing, sheathing, insulating)
        • Hot water boiler mechanical installation (piping, venting, wiring)
        • System commissioning and troubleshooting
        • Customer service

Qualifications

Candidates must have a college or university diploma or degree (or equivalent work-related experience), be willing to travel, and have a passion for renewable energy systems. Our new team member will have a deep interest in mechanical heating systems, construction, engineering/design and biomass heating. Other minimum qualifications include:

    • driver’s license (class DZ an asset)
      • experience in modern wood combustion
      • proficiency with computers (Word, Excel, CAD, controls software)

Additional valuable skills and experience for this role include:

    • pipe fitting
      • welding
      • proficiency with AutoCAD or other CAD software
      • hydronics
      • electrical and electronics
      • IT and networking

Project Leader in Sawmilling and Wood Chip Heating

Job Description

Biothermic is seeking applications from qualified candidates for a full-time Project Leader in Sawmilling and Wood Chip Heating.

The Project Leader will play a lead role in the development of small-scale sawmilling and wood chip heating as part of our work with two remote Ontario First Nations communities. This full-time position will be located in Thunder Bay with regular travel to both communities.

As Project Leader, you will be responsible for:

      •  Skill development and training of project participants through mentoring in small-scale sawmill operations, wood yard planning and maintenance, and equipment maintenance
        • Training through mentoring in wood chip boiler plant operation and maintenance
        • Training in wood chip production and storage
        • Training through mentoring in aspects of business management including wood procurement and wood product sales
        • Knowledge-building on forestry operations including small scale harvesting, species selection, and tree selection

Qualifications

The best candidate for this role will have a very unique set of skills, experience and motivations. Biothermic projects are groundbreaking and very challenging: the success of the these projects will be influenced by the abilities of the Biothermic team and the Project Leader and the synergy between them. We require a candidate with the following minimum qualifications:

        • Graduate of a post-secondary program in Forestry, Indigenous studies, Resource Management or similar discipline
          • Experience or existing positive relationships with Ontario First Nations
          • Demonstrated knowledge of forestry operations including harvesting and saw milling
          • Collaborative attitude to reconciliation, mentoring and skills development
          • Demonstrated knowledge of forest products from lumber to firewood to biomass fuels
          • Strong desire to foster growth and development in Northern Ontario
          • At least 5-years experience working in Northern Ontario Forests with demonstrated positive stakeholder relations
